What is the Difference?

When you decide to buy a stock, you have two main ways to decide which one and when:

  • Fundamental Analysis – Examines a company's financial health, management, industry, and economy to determine its intrinsic value. It answers: "Is this a good company worth owning for years?"
  • Technical Analysis – Studies past price movements, trading volume, and chart patterns to forecast future price direction. It answers: "When is the right time to buy or sell?"

📌 Key insight: Neither is "better" – they serve different purposes. Many successful investors use a combination of both.

Deep Dive: Fundamental Analysis

Fundamental analysis is the cornerstone of value investing – made famous by Warren Buffett. It involves analyzing a company as a business, not just a ticker symbol.

Key components for PSX investors:

  • Economic analysis: GDP growth, interest rates, inflation, political stability in Pakistan.
  • Industry analysis: Is the cement, banking, or textile sector growing? What are the trends?
  • Company analysis: Revenue, profits, debt, management quality, competitive advantage (moat).

PSX Example: You analyze a bank's financial statements, find its ROE is consistently above 20%, P/E ratio below 6, and debt-to-equity low. You conclude it is undervalued and buy to hold for 3-5 years.

Deep Dive: Technical Analysis

Technical analysis ignores the company's fundamentals and focuses purely on price action. It assumes that all known information is already reflected in the price, and that history tends to repeat itself.

Common tools for PSX traders:

  • Support and Resistance: Price levels where a stock tends to stop falling (support) or rising (resistance).
  • Moving Averages (MA): Smoothens price data to identify trends. Example: 50-day MA.
  • Relative Strength Index (RSI): Measures overbought (above 70) or oversold (below 30) conditions.
  • Volume: Increasing volume confirms the strength of a price move.

PSX Example: A cement stock has been falling for weeks and reaches a support level (e.g., Rs. 50). RSI drops to 28 (oversold). You anticipate a bounce and buy for a short-term gain of 5-10%.

Which One Should You Use?

Your choice depends on your investment style and time commitment:

  • Long-term investor (passive): Focus on fundamental analysis. You don't need to watch prices daily.
  • Active trader (short-term): Use technical analysis to time entries and exits. Requires daily monitoring.
  • Best of both worlds: Use fundamentals to pick strong companies, then use technicals to decide when to buy (e.g., during a dip or oversold condition).

💡 Pro tip for beginners: Start with fundamental analysis to understand what makes a good company. Then, gradually learn technical analysis to improve your entry and exit timing.
