What is a Stock Market?

If you are new to investing, the term "stock market" can sound intimidating. But at its core, a stock market is simply a marketplace where people buy and sell ownership in companies โ€“ those ownership units are called stocks or shares.

๐Ÿ“Œ Quick definition: A stock market is a regulated platform (physical or electronic) where investors can trade shares of publicly listed companies. In Pakistan, this is the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX).

Why do companies sell stocks?

Imagine a local business in Karachi wants to expand โ€“ open new branches, buy machinery, or hire more people. They need money (capital). Instead of taking a bank loan, they can sell a part of the company to the public through an Initial Public Offering (IPO). People who buy those shares become shareholders โ€“ partial owners of the company. The company gets the funds, and investors hope the company grows so their shares become more valuable.

How does the stock market work?

The stock market works through an exchange (like PSX) and brokers who act as middlemen. Here is the simple flow:

  1. A company lists its shares on the exchange (IPO).
  2. Investors open a brokerage account (or use a virtual simulator like PSE).
  3. Investors place orders to buy or sell shares at a specific price.
  4. The exchange matches buyers and sellers โ€“ trades are executed.
  5. After the trade, ownership is transferred electronically (settlement).

๐Ÿ“Š PSX example: On the Pakistan Stock Exchange, most shares trade in market lots (e.g., 500 shares for stocks below Rs. 50). You can place a limit order to buy at a specific price or a market order to buy immediately at the best available price.

Key participants in the stock market

  • Regulator: SECP (Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan) โ€“ ensures fair practices.
  • Stock Exchange: PSX โ€“ the trading platform.
  • Brokers: Licensed firms (e.g., Alfalah Securities, Arif Habib) that execute trades for investors.
  • Investors: Individuals, institutions, mutual funds.

Why do stock prices move up and down?

Stock prices change based on supply and demand. More buyers than sellers โ†’ price rises. More sellers than buyers โ†’ price falls. What drives demand? Things like:

  • Company earnings reports (profit or loss).
  • Economic news (interest rates, inflation, GDP).
  • Political stability or instability in Pakistan.
  • Global events, commodity prices (oil, gold).
  • Market sentiment (fear or greed).

  • Bear market: Prices are falling, pessimism dominates.
  • Dividend: A portion of company profits paid to shareholders (cash or bonus shares).
  • Portfolio: The collection of stocks an investor owns.
  • Index: A measurement of a group of stocks (e.g., KSEโ€‘100 tracks top 100 PSX companies).
