How This Is Calculated
Every stock you pick is first trimmed down to only the trading days it shares in common with all the others - this way, whichever stocks you compare, every statistic is computed over the exact same period.
Total & annualized return, volatility, max drawdown, and Sharpe ratio are calculated the same way as our Stock Risk Statistics tool - see that page for the formulas.
Worked example: Comparing a Rs. 45 stock and a Rs. 900 stock directly on a price chart is meaningless - the Rs. 900 stock would dwarf the other visually even if the cheaper stock grew faster in percentage terms. Rebasing both to start at 100 fixes this: if the Rs. 45 stock rises to Rs. 54 (a 20% gain) it's plotted at 120, and if the Rs. 900 stock rises to Rs. 990 (also 10%) it's plotted at 110 - so the lines show real growth, not price level.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are the stocks compared over the "same overlapping trading days" instead of each stock's own full history?
If one stock has data back to 2015 and another was only listed in 2020, comparing their "5 year returns" directly would be misleading - one number would cover a very different period than the other. We find the trading days common to all the stocks you pick and compute every statistic over that exact same window, so the comparison is apples-to-apples.
What does the indexed (base 100) chart mean?
Stocks trade at very different price levels - one might be Rs. 40 and another Rs. 1,200 - so plotting raw prices together tells you nothing useful. We rebase every stock to start at 100 on the first common date, so the lines show percentage growth from that point and can be compared visually regardless of price level.
Why do the numbers here sometimes differ slightly from the Stock Risk Statistics tool for the same stock?
The Stock Risk Statistics tool uses that stock's own full available history for the selected period. This comparison tool restricts every stock to only the trading days common to ALL the stocks you've picked, which can be a slightly shorter window - that's intentional, for a fair comparison.
Is this dividend-adjusted?
No - like our other tools, this uses price-only historical data (no dividend/split adjustment).
